Marantz’s new PM-15S2 Limited is visually striking! It’s beautiful black anodized aluminum exterior grabs the eye’s attention. The performance under the hood is equally remarkable. If you recall the heritage of Marantz, you will know about the original MA-9 monoblock amplifiers. These beauties delighted audiophiles back in the day. More recently, the MA-9S2 Mono Blocks have dazzled listeners with an updated performance from the original MA-9′s. At $12,000 a pair, they are out of reach of enthusiasts. However, the PM-15S2 Limited is right in the range we might call “very affordable” at $2500.
Proprietary HDAM-SA3 modules are part of the secret sauce in this integrated amp and preamp. They offer high slew rate and low noise operation which contributes dramatically to the transparent sound of the PM15S2 Limited. Under the hood is also a custom-wound torroidal power transformer that supplies voltage to a high current, regulated power supply for rapid response to supply demand. Two 20,000 microfarad filter capacitors [custom made for Marantz] store and deliver the huge current reserves needed for that immediately recognizable woofer control. The PM-15S2 Limited’s current feedback power amplifier delivers a minimum of 90 watts per channel into 8 ohms and features a DC servo for superior low frequency response. Listeners of vinyl will appreciate the fast, sonically transparent qualities of the
constant current feedback moving magnet phono stage, as well as the accurate image allowed by the digitally controlled analog volume stage that delivers channel accuracy within .5 dB. HDAM-SA2 modules are included in a buffer amp circuit at the CD input for even more clarity with digital discs.
A “Bi-Mode” setting makes it possible to use two PM-15S2 as L/R mono-integrated amplifiers for a complete left-right channel isolation. The power amp direct input allows easy integration with a home theater processor.

McIntosh has introduced a new series of high-quality performance-designed loudspeakers. At CES2012, the trio of new speakers were on tap for attendees to enjoy and peruse.
The McIntosh XR100 [$10,000 pair] is the new floor standing loudspeaker in the famed XR series. Each XR100 is meticulously crafted and hand-built in Binghamton NY. McIntosh’s engineers have designed this series using audiophile-grade component speakers, made from the very finest materials. The speakers are designed for home theater as well music listening. The XR100 uses a total of 13 drivers enabling response from the lowest note to beyond audibility. The alignment of the drivers on the front cabinet is in a vertical array positioning ideal response for the listener. With the deep bass extension there is no need for a subwoofer. The XR100 is capable handling the large power output of McIntosh Labs amplifiers with a power handling specification of 600 watts. Finishes include a gorgeous gloss black, a luxurious pear maple, and a popular red walnut to match decorator choices in your client’s home. All of the new loudspeakers have magnetic grilles for a clean appearance and this adds to the sleek appearance of the XR100 loudspeaker.
The XR50 [$4,000 pair] is a a modestly sized bookshelf speaker whose voice belies it’s size. It is a three-way four-speaker design that delivers a full audio performance. It’s imaging and space are ideal for precise two-channel listening as well as theater use. The XR50 is a 4 driver system including a super-tweeter, two midranges and one woofer. This unique McIntosh speaker configuration offers accurate vocal reproduction and enhances the ability of the XR50 to let the listener localize placement of sound. The XR50 is designed for use with all McIntosh amplifiers with it’s conservative 300 watt power rating.
To complement the XR100 and XR50 in theater and other applications, the LCR80 [$2,500 each] is a welcome addition. It is a true LCR with a metal alloy midrange/tweeter mounting system that allows rotation of the drivers to meet the needs of their application – Left/Center/Right. To allow this loudspeaker to be used in many applications it comes with wall mounting bracket and built in mounting anchor points to allow on-wall or in-cabinet use as well as other placements. It also has a 300 watt power handling.

Feature Summary:

CES 2012 – New products abound in the McIntosh Labs suite at the Venetian in Las Vegas. These handcrafted reference quality products establish a new standard in audio components available from McIntosh both in value and in this product launch, even in the available price point of a McIntosh Labs audio/video product.
MX121 $6000 – AV Preamp/Processor
This new offering allows McIntosh audio quality to be mated with an extensive host of AV features and wide system integration. Users will be able to experience 7.1 decoding with the use of one or two subwoofers. Four optional channel outputs are on tap for left/right width and left/right height speaker placements. For additional zones there are two additional audio zone outputs to allow the user to send signals from the main zone sources to secondary zones. Each additional zone has independent volume control. Digital audio signals are processed by an on-board Audyessy processing system including features such as MultiEQ, XT Auto Calibration with MIC and Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume. All Dolby and DTS listening modes are included for perfect audio mode selection. Apple iPod, Touch, iPad and iPhone may be connected and deployed using the USB input. AirPlay Wireless is also included. Audio may be played by streaming from network connected PC’s, NAS Drives, Servers and the like. With Internet connectivity, the world of Internet Radio and Pandora are also provided. On the video side, Flicker is interfaced as a media provider. HDMI 1.4 makes connections to video and audio devices simpler than ever. A web interface allows even more capabilities of this very cool component. The beauty and construction quality of a McIntosh is clearly visible in this exciting preamp processor.
MC8207 $6000 7-Channel Power Amplifier with 1,400 watts of continuous power
The MC8207 is the perfect mate for the MX121. It is a cosmetically scaled-back McIntosh amplifier but the performance of this power amplifier is not in any way reduced. To achieve this remarkable price point, the engineering team at McIntosh did some remarkable things. The normal casework for a McIntosh transformer, chassis housing and heat sinks receive some remarkable finish work. In this product, they are not brought to the beautiful curved lines of the typical Mcintosh amplifier – but left sharper cornered and squared off in appearance. The classic blue meters are replaced by an electronic version. These chassis reductions are differentiated in cosmetics only and not in any way reduced in quality. So if one is willing to accept a more squared chassis and electronic metering, the MC8207 makes seven channels of 200 watts each available at a never before attainable price point.
